January Demonstation by John Connolly - Acrylic Seascape & Woodscape

Although we're still looking forward to Christmas, it's not too early to be thinking about the first of next year's demonstrations.   2014 starts for us on Saturday 11th January with an Acrylic session from John Connolly.

John trained as an art teacher at Doncaster and in Drama at Derby University.  After teaching both for several years , he became founder member and artistic director of Compact Theatre Company and has acted professionally (under the name Harry Connolly) since 1992. John divides his time between painting, acting and writing (with a bias towards painting since 2003).  He has written three plays which have toured in the UK and in the UAE.

John also sings with the Shaydes, previously known as Old Spice.  In 2010, he became a full time artist working in his own Ormscliffe Studio in Bolsover.

A commission of 25% will be charged on any sales.  20% of this will be retained by the charity and the remaining 5% goes to cover administration costs.

Please note that all existing artwork in the shop will be selling at reduced prices in the two weeks before the exhibition starts (2nd January to 16th January.

Any queries about this exhibition should be directed to Peter Cooke or Ron Walker.  More details will be announced at the demonstrations on Saturday 14th December 2013 and Saturday 11th January 2014.

Workshop review by Julie Lightburn

Long time member and Committee stalwart Julie Lightburn has sent us news of some recent workshops she attended and photos of the finished work

Over to Julie ....

“I recently enjoyed two workshops.  One was a late 2012 Christmas Present – a Pastels workshop with Cath Inglis at Bishop Wilton.  Cath's workshops fill up extremely quickly and I was too late booking to get in earlier in the year.   The other was an early 2013 Christmas Present – an acrylic workshop with Robert Dutton at Follifoot.  If you're very quick you just might catch a place on his last workshop this year on Saturday 7th Dec
Both paintings include water and rocks, but the contrast couldn’t be greater.  The Woodland Glade being a very soft subtle painting and the Seascape being a strong dramatic painting.

The finished piece

The work in progress

post-workshop critique

Workshops are a fantastic opportunity to try out new styles and techniques with different materials. Most workshops start with a demonstration followed by personal instruction whilst you work on your individual painting.  There are often further short demos during the day and then a look at what everyone has done at the end of the day with lots of useful suggestions on how to progress further.”
Thanks to Julie for sharing these and it's particularly good to see the work in progress stages of the seascape.  Are any members interested in seeing longer articles showing stage by stage construction of an artwork ?  If so, drop a mail to this blog.

If this has given you the taste for one of Cath's extremely popular workshops, check out her own site for more details and don't forget our own workshop with her in February 2014 see here for details and application form.

Coming up in December .....

In just over two weeks, on Saturday 14th, we have the December demonstration at the usual venue of Christ church hall on Stockton Lane.
This month we're delighted to feature Haidee-Jo Summers demonstrating flowers and still life in acrylics.
In May 2012, the SAA awarded Haidee their prestigious 'Artist of the Year' title - a great honour.  This year she had a painting in the Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition and now has three works accepted for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters exhibition - which opens just before she comes to demonstrate for us in December !
To learn more about her art, visit

Ana Maus at Mermaid & Miller

Another great exhibition you really should check out is Art from her Heart by Ana Maus (aka Anna Dinsdale), currently showing at Mermaid & Miller, York.

A few of us went along to the opening night on Friday 8th and enjoyed a wonderful evening of art by Anna, ably supported by story telling from Adrian Spendlow - not to mention generous amounts of wine and sweets.

The show continues throughout November at Mermaid & Miller on Swinegate.

November Demonstration: Stephen Coates - Reflection in Watercolour

There's been a last minute change to our autumn schedule.   In place of the advertised artist, Saturday's demonstration will now feature Sheffield's very own Stephen Coates.

Although an artist of some ability from an early age, Stephen's teachers suggested his future lay in other directions.  With 16 years in the music industry behind him and a further 16 years running his own sandwich business, Stephen finally disregarded their advice and returned to his first love Art.  Turning professional in April 2011, he now runs classes and art groups in his home city, specialising in watercolour.

Follow the link to visit Stephen's own site to see examples of his work and read about his classes and groups.

Art from her Heart

We've had an exciting Autumn so far with a number of exhibitions and more to come as we head into the dark days of Winter.  But let's not forget those parts of our city which keep a permanent artistic presence all year round, not least our friends at Mermaid & Miller.

Their latest presentation is a collaboration between Hull-based Ana Maus and York's Adrian Spendlow.   Art from her Heart runs throughout November with an opening night this Friday, 8th November between 7:00pm and 9:00pm.  Go along and explore an evening of art from Ana, with storytelling by Adrian.  Wine, soft drinks and sweets will be available.

Exhibition Wrap Up

Some final thoughts on the recently concluded 198th Autumn Exhibition so, over to our very own Shannon Morgan .....

With the Treasurer balancing our account , and the cheques dropping through your letter boxes as we speak (or type), the 198th Exhibition is quickly drawing to its official close. But before we consign it to memory, I would like to give a quick wrap up.

First I would like to thank all of the hard working Stewards, the talented demonstrators and the artists who attended and gave their support for helping making both the week and our first "Meet the Artist" day a resounding success.  We had over 770 people through during the week  ... with 223 coming through on Saturday alone. A photographer from Yorkshire Living was in attendance and we should hopefully see an article in the near future.

Our new venue was a big hit with both members and public alike  .. and we received many positive comments in the visitors book.

We should all be very proud of what we've been able to achieve by working together, and if anyone would like to get more involved in future exhibitions or serve on the sub-committee .. please just contact me using the details below.

We will be having a Lessons Learned meeting at the Black Swan on Peasholme Green towards the end of November to review how the exhibition went (what worked and what didn't), and to look at how we can improve going forward to move from strength to strength.  If you would be interested in attending or have comments you would like me to put forward please let me know at , or by post at 5a Foss View, York. YO1 7NG.

We will be staying with York Theatre Royal De Grey Rooms for our 199th Spring Exhibition, which will be held from Monday 14th April up to and including Sunday 20th April 2014.   We should be in a position to confirm dates for our much anticipated Autumn Bi-Centennial exhibition soon.

Angela McCall Workshop

Looking for something exciting to do on the 2nd November ?

There are still two spots left for Angela's "Creative Watercolour Florals" workshop being held this Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 at Christ Church Hall.

The cost is just £23.00, and the aim is to encourage a more imaginative, expressive, semi abstract and fluid approach to floral art and help boost confidence.

We will be using watercolour but perhaps introducing oil pastels, acrylic inks and white gouache and working from a limited source.  ie: one or two flower heads and a few leaves.

Please bring your own art materials to include big brushes, mixing palettes and big sheets of paper (not less than 20" x 16") in order to stimulate big ideas.

If you would like to attend, please contact Shannon Morgan at or by phone on 01904 637 863

Business As Usual

It's been a quieter week here on the blog since the 198th Exhibition closed last Sunday, but behind the scenes our crack team of number monkeys have been hard at work processing sales, crunching numbers and balancing the books.

All the artist commission cheques were released at the weekend so, if you sold art, cards or prints during the 198th, you can look forward to a cheque in the next few days.

It's not too early to start thinking about our next events.  We're pleased to be back at the De Grey Rooms from April 14th to 20th, 2014 for the Spring Exhibition.  After that, in just a little under a year from now, we have our historic 200th Exhibition, for which we're already starting to draw up exciting plans.  If you enjoyed this autumn's show, please consider sparing some of your time to volunteer at one or both of these.  Keep watching the blog, FaceBook and our Newsletter for more news as it develops.

For the coming weeks, don't forget Angela's workshop this coming Saturday (very few places left) and our next demonstrations at Christchurch Hall by Hazel Lale on 9th November and Heidi-Jo Summers on 14th December - more details can be found on our demonstrations page.

Normal service on this page is resuming from tonight. If you've got any artwork, news or articles to share, please send them in to

Our Exhibition's Final Visitor

As we were closing up this evening, the De Grey rooms' very own Lindsay ( without whom this week would have been impossible ) brought in her little friend Maisy to have a last look around.

Welcome to the World of Art, Maisy.

Closing the Autumn Exhibition.

Well, we've only just finished packing up after the 198th Exhibition, but it's already looking like one of our most successful events of recent years.  15 paintings and over 200 cards and prints were sold and there was a steady stream of customers purchasing refreshments at Saturday's cafĂ©.

Our raffle attracted a lot of interest and many compliments from visitors. We're delighted to announce that the lucky winner is Julie Brown of York. We hope she enjoys her prize of The Old Manse, seen below with its artist Chris Dewire.

Thanks to all the members who exhibited, stewarded, served the teas or helped with the setting up and dismantling.  Thanks to Jane Duke for admirably filling the role of Exhibition Selector.  Thanks to everyone who gave a demonstration during Meet the Artist Day.  Thanks to Lindsay and the rest of our gracious hosts at the De Grey Rooms.  But most of all thank you to our Exhibition Secretary Shannon Morgan for crafting this incredibly fun week from the ground up and steering it to a fabulous conclusion.

We look forward to returning to this beautiful venue for the Spring 2014 show.  April 14th to 20th 2014 - make a date in your diary now.

Saturday at the Exhibition - Meet the Artist Day

We've had pleasing visitor numbers all week but yesterday, Meet the Artist Day,  was our busiest yet with footfall in the hundreds and a visit from Yorkshire Living.
The day was structured around a series of well received demonstrations from our President, Angela McCall, and popular artists Pat Thompson, Shirley Davis Dew and Rhona Rowley.
Julie Lightburn and Caroline Lewis were in attendance all day, to explain their creative process and answer questions from the public.  Other members of the Society (and in some cases their models ) mingled with visitors to explain the activities and benefits that come with YAS membership.
An additional attraction on Saturday was the tea and coffee area , just off from the main Ball Room, which allowed visitors to linger and consider purchases over as leisurely cuppa. Thanks to everyone who took a turn there to keep the food and drink flowing.
Here's a selection of pictures from the day for those who missed it.  There'll be more here and on FaceBook over the next couple days.
