St Leonard's Hospice Opening Night

The response to the St Leonard's Hospice exhibition has been overwhelmingly positive with over 40 pieces of work submitted to date.  An opening event was arranged for Friday evening and saw 8 paintings sold in the first hour.

The exhibition is on for another two weeks, so members are encouraged to continue to submit work.

There's currently room for a further 12 to 15 to be hung, with a few more held in reserve to replace sales. Paintings can be taken along anytime the shop is open.

Opening Times:  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday  10am to 4pm

Here's how The Press covered the exhibition

It's 2013 - Do you Know Where Your Brushes Are ?

Happy New Year from the committee of York Art Society to all members - and to any potential new members reading this.

It's 2013 already, almost 92 years since our first full meeting in March 1921 at the School of Art in the York Exhibition Buildings (now the York Archives).  At this inaugural gathering The Dean of York, The Very Rev. William Foxley Norris was elected as the very first Chairman of a Society that aspired to promote and encourage the practice of art in York and the surrounding area, hold occasional private and public exhibitions of members' work, and organise lectures for interested parties.
Our Founder: The Very Rev. William Foxley Norris

Almost a century on, and now steered by our present Chairman Mr Peter Cooke, those remain our goals.  We're still finalising the 2013 programme but it promises a varied mix of demonstrations, workshops and prestigious exhibitions to serve our membership of 150.

Our new year kicks off on January 12th with an afternoon of seasonal pastels from Jeremy Ford ( full details to follow on this blog shortly ) .  It's barely a month since our Winter exhibition concluded but plans are already well underway for the Spring collection, to be held at the Guildhall, St. Helen's Square, York between 11th and 18th March 2013.  Once again, all members are encouraged to submit work and support the event.  Any non-members reading this who are intrigued by the proposition should use the links to the right to contact our membership secretary.

Hopefully it'll be another vibrant and productive year for all of us. York is a city that displays the full impact of the seasons and ought to be an inspiration to all of us  - as I type this I'm looking out at a very swollen Ouse, wondering when the river will peak and if my kitchen will remain dry when it does.  However, any good artist knows that personal dramas stimulate and inspire our best work, so at the least we should all get some good pictures out of the floods.
