York Open Studios

As spring approaches, York Open Studios once again throws open workshop doors across our city for two weekends in April.

Always a popular part of the local arts scene, this event gives you an opportunity to meet artists and view their work in their own homes and studios, all within a ten mile radius of the city.  Mediums involved usually include painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, jewellery, photography, stained glass, wood-carving, furniture and ceramics.

This year the dates to remember are April 12, 13, 14, 20 and 21.   More detail can be found on the official site where you can also download a brochure of events and view a map of venues.  Be sure to check their news page for last minute updates and alterations.

Now in its thirteenth year, York Open Studios reflects the strength and diversity of visual arts within the city of York and the surrounding area.

Leonardo has now left the Building

The 197th York Art Society Exhibition has now closed.

The final day was Monday 18th March.  Over the preceding week a total of 13 artworks were sold by our members and there was also a steady trade in unframed prints and  cards.

Thanks to everyone who participated - either by submitting work or by helping with organising and stewarding - and to everyone who visited.   This may have been our last time at the Guildhall for the foreseeable future so it's pleasing to have finished on such a positive note.

Watch out for detail of forthcoming exhibitions involving YAS members by regularly checking the Exhibitions page of this blog.  The next two major events are our participation in the Open Air Exhibition in the centre of York in June and our own 198th Winter Exhibition in October 2013.

Phil Hart and Luisa Holden at the197th Exhibition

Here's some more photos from the current exhibition in York's Guildhall.  At the time of writing 11 paintings have sold and there's been brisk sales in cards and unframed prints.

Among the artists featured in the 197th Exhibition are Phil Hart and Luisa Holden.   Here's Phil, standing next to one of his popular and attention grabbing York city scenes,

and here's a close-up of the art.

More examples of this city series can be found at Phil's own site  along with some of his portraits and other works.

Luisa is our current Membership Secretary and a frequent contributor to this blog.  She also won the public vote for Best Picture at last week's opening night.

The exhibition continues until Monday lunchtime. Members can collect unsold work between 2:30pm and 4:00pm on that afternoon.

197th Exhibition Is Now Open

The 197th York Art Society Exhibition is now on at the prestigious Guildhall in York.  The Exhibition opened to the public at 12 noon yesterday and runs until Monday 18th March.  Further details on opening times can be found here.

Congratulations to the twenty or so brave souls who treked through arctic temperatures to last night's opening evening where they were warmly welcomed with food and wine by our chairman Peter Cook and the rest of the committee.

Once again there was an impressive variety of subjects and media on show among the membership's work. We're pleased to report that a number of sales have already been made. The public vote for best picture was won by Luisa Holden. More updates to follow soon, so check back here later in the week.

This will be the final exhibition curated by Ron Walker who is stepping down as Exhibition Secretary at May's AGM.  Ron has worked tirelessly to organise and promote these events over the last five years, ably supported by his wife Vivian.  On behalf of the Society, Peter thanked Ron for all of his efforts.  Shannon Morgan has offered to take on the mantle so this crucial role is in a safe pair of hands for the future.

Unfortunately rising costs mean that this may also be the last event at the Guildhall and we are exploring other local venues to host future events.

Thanks to everyone who participated in organising this spring's show, or who helped during yesterday's handing in and setting up. We still need volunteers for stewarding shifts during the week so, if you can help, contact Ron or Peter.

Cath Inglis Pastel Workshops

Many members will remember the enjoyable and informative pastel demonstartions and workshops delivered by Cath Inglis. She has been teaching pastel for several years and is a Professional Demonstrator for the SAA and a member of the Society of Women Artists. She regularly exhibits in the Mall Galleries and at The Kennel Club in London and is an online tutor for Art Tutor.

Cath has now announced her own programme of one and two day pastel workshops for 2013, suitable for all levels of students.  Full details are available at Cath's website or by downloading a copy of her workshop brochure.

Studio Workshops
One and two day workshops are held at the Old Granary Studio in the pretty village of Skirpenbeck near York. These workshops are tailored to suit all abilities working with a small group of students only.  This ensures personal tuition with each student.

Workshops begin at 9.30am and finish at 4pm. You will have an invitation for lunch (including wine of course! ) to make for a very enjoyable day and learn how to work with this wonderful medium of soft pastel. Tea and coffee with biscuits available throughout the day. It is advisable to book early for the Old Granary Studio workshops as only 7 or 8 places are available.

Bishop Wilton Workshops
One day workshops are held at Bishop Wilton Village Hall, a beautiful new hall with excellent light and lots of parking. These workshops are also tailored to suit all abilities, working with a limited number of students.

Workshops begin at 9.45am and finish at 3.45pm. Please bring a packed lunch, sandwiches can be purchased at the village shop, or pub food in the village. Tea and coffee with biscuits available throughout the day.

Please note these events are not organised by York Art Society so anyone wishing to attend should contact Cath directly by email or via her website
