A Cock and Bull Story

Any members who've enjoyed the current production of iShandy at York's Theatre Royal may be interested to learn that an exhibition to celebrate the tercentenary of Laurence Sterne's birth in 1713 opened today.

Organised by the Laurence Sterne Trust, the new exhibition features the works of renowned Yorkshire artist Tom Wood and takes its title from the well known closing lines closing lines of  The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.  

Cocks and Bulls : Paintings and Drawings by Tom Wood is on show at Shandy Hall and runs from Sunday, 28th April until June 9th.

Mermaid & Miller exhibition opens 1st May

With less than a week to go, here's the flyer that Shannon designed for her joint exhibition with Lin at  Mermaid & Miller in Swinegate.  Double click on the image to see it full size.

Both artists have a number of pieces on this blog already ( check out our archives in the panel to the right of this article ) and a visit to Shannon's own site is also strongly reccomended.

Remember, Wednesday 1st of May is the date for your diary, but the exhibition continues throughout the month of May, 10am to 4pm daily, Monday to Saturday.

Betty Law and Christine Garratt at York Theatre Royal

Two long standing members of York Art Society, Betty Law and Christine Garratt , have painted together for several years.  They now have a joint exhibition of their work at the Theatre Royal, St. Leonard's Place, York.

Their exhibition, entitled Two Friends, runs from next Monday, 29th April until Sunday 9th June.

Exhibition by Shannon Morgan and Lin Taylor.

We're pleased to announce that two YAS members will be holding a joint exhibition at Mermaid & Miller throughout the month of May.  We urge you to go along and enjoy work by Shannon Morgan and Lin Taylor.

Shannon will be exhibiting her impressionistic landscapes.  Lin has produced a series of Owls and Kingfishers, painted directly onto bird feathers.

The venue is
Mermaid & Miller, 24 Swinegate, (Nr. St. Sampsons Church) York.
Opening times are 10 am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

One of the newest shops in The Quarter ,  Mermaid & Miller stocks an intriguing range of lovely handcrafted items.  The store held it's opening evening this past weekend and is operated by a local arts and crafts co-operative, who have previously exhibited at the Your Emporium site in Mickelgate (as reported in The Press before Christmas).

Shannon and Lin's exhibition begins on Wednesday May 1st, but the store is already open daily for the sale of craft items, so pop along and support this local venture.  You can also follow Mermaid & Miller on FaceBook by following this link.

York Open Studios 2013

Hopefully some of you have had a chance over the last couple of days to visit the diverse range of art on show around our city in this year's York Open Studios  but, if not, remember it continues for a second weekend on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st April.

Art exhibition in Newton on Ouse

Some of the members of the York Art Society are also members of the Newton on Ouse art group.

Their annual exhibition takes place over the coming May Bank Holiday weekend and is well worth a visit.

April Demonstration by Gareth Watling

The first demonstration in our 2013/2014 programme takes place on Saturday 13th April and features British Birds in Watercolour by Gareth Watling.

The venue is Heworth Christchurch on Stockton Lane and starts at the usual time of 2:00pm.  Free to members and £5 entry for guests.  More details on demonstartions can be found here.
