Off The Wall

Here's news of a first time Visual Arts Festival to be held in Beverley on Saturday July 12th 2014.

This is a Georgian Quarter event, in association with Creation fine arts and East Riding Artists Art on the Street, and supported by Beverley Town Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The Off the Wall festival runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm.   It will include 50 stalls across St Mary’s wall,  St Marys Church,  the Beverley Arms,  Coronation Gardens and even more in Creation Fine Arts Gallery.   Other events  include puppets, bellringers and buskers.

This is a great opportunity to see artists at work, chat with them, view their artworks and maybe even buy something.  A wide range of affordable work will be on sale.

Everything is free to view, though there may be charges for some of the workshops that are running throughout the day.

York Curiouser

You may have noticed a number of art installations appearing round the city in the last week or so, courtesy of York Curiouser, part of York University's Festival of Ideas.

Our own Julie Lightburn has been working on laser cutting some of the stencils used for painting a series of poems, In Between, about the snickets, passages and yards in York.   The stencils are applied in the places that inspired the poet -  John Wedgewood Clarke

Passages from the poem are on walls in various sites across the city.  You can access a map of locations by clicking here

Thanks to Julie for the information and the pictures used above.

St Michael le Belfrey August Exhibition

Here's a poster by Lin Taylor to advertise the next St Michael le Belfrey art & pottery exhibition which takes place towards the end of the summer.

This is the third of these popular events featuring local artists and potters, following on from two successful shows last winter. The exhibition is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Friday 15th August and Saturday 16th August..  Admission is free to the public.

Please note, this is not a York Art Society event.  This is an independent exhibition that Lin has organised with the Never Give Up Group, a local homeless charity and support group.   You can read about their work and previous St Michael exhibitions elsewhere on this blog.

Open Exhibition - Escrick

Here at the blog we're always on the look out for local exhibitions - particularly those organised by our members - so here's some very welcome advance notice from Sadie Ashton of an event in Escrick towards the end of the summer.

"Art without Fuss" is hosted by St Helen's Church in Escrick  from September 4th to September 6th 2014 and is open between 10am and 4pm on each of those days.  Regular bus services run from the city and stop directly outside the venue.

Artists wishing to participate can display their work at a cost of only £5 per pew.  20% of sales will go to St Helen's Church.

Contact Sadie Ashton at  for more details.

Mermaid and Miller Summer Exhibition

Now that summer is finally here - and it's beautiful night in Hatfield as I sit typing this -  you're probably all engrossed in the World Cup and looking forward to next week's Glastonbury festival.

However, if you can tear yourselves away from those cultural feasts and find a bit of time for some local art, why not pop down to our gracious friends at Mermaid and Miller who are currently hosting their grand summer open exhibition ?
Opening Night at M&M
Featuring work by a number of our members,  including Chris Dewire Lin Taylor and many more, the exhibition runs throughout June.  Opening night was Friday 6th June and our very own Luisa Holden, pastel artist extraordinaire and part-time paparazzi,  went along and snapped the photos you see here.
