Artist Days at Blossom Street Gallery

More news from Julie Lightburn who, since taking part in York Open Studios, has been delighted to have had the opportunity to exhibit regularly at the Blossom Street Gallery.

Julie has several paintings in their current exhibition “The Great Outdoors” and will have a selection of new pictures in their next exhibition “8 x 8”   All of the framed paintings will be no more than eight inches square – so they’ll fit in the smallest of modern homes (or an alcove in your stately mansion).

The Blossom Street gallery is just outside Micklegate Bar and is open Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am – 5.30pm and Sundays 10:00am – 3:00pm.   Parking is free in Nunnery Lane Car Park on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday morning up to 11:00am, or on Micklegate at any time for just 60p an hour.

Julie will be in the Gallery on Saturday 9th and 23rd August.   She's yet to decide whether to paint more buttercups, seascapes, or something completely different !

Poppleton Artists Exhibition

News from Glynis Learmonth and June Hardy about an exhibition in Poppleton over the upcoming August Bank Holiday.  The official press release and contact details are reproduced below.

Poppleton Artists Exhibition (14th Year)

More than 200 pieces of art work will be on sale at the Poppleton Artist’s Exhibition and Sale, which is being held at The Tithe Barn, Church Lane, Nether Poppleton over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

A percentage of all the art sold at the event is donated to the Tithe Barn. Over £12,000 has been donated since the first exhibition in August 2000 held to help raise funds for the maintenance of this historic building. Both established and up-and-coming artists exhibit at the event, which is now in its 14th year and attracts an increasing number of visitors.

June Hardy, Chair of the Poppleton Art Exhibition Committee said: ‘We are very excited about this year’s event. The standard and diversity of art we receive becomes more im-pressive each year so we are sure the public will enjoy the exhibition.  There are art works available for sale from around £25 to £500 so there is something for everyone.  The lovely home-made refreshments are also very popular with visitors.'

If you are an artist living in Poppleton and would be interested in showing your work at the exhibition, please contact June Hardy, (Chairman) on 01904 797217.

The Exhibition is open from 22nd - 25th August. A preview evening will take place on Friday 22nd from 6:30 pm. to 9:00 pm.  Tickets for the preview are available from 01904 797217 at a cost of £5 which includes wine and canapes.  The exhibition will be open from 10:00 am. to 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on Monday.  Entry is free and refreshments are available. In Memory of Frank Hodgson

Sad news of the passing of a longstanding member of York Art Society, Frank Hodgson, who died in York Hospital last month following a heart attack on June 19th.

Aged 97, Frank had not been active in the society for some years but had always taken great pleasure from his painting which he enthusiastically shared with other artists.

A celebration of his life took place at York Crematorium last week.  Frank is survived by his children, Ceri and Gwyn, and grandchildren Kate, Ben, Emma and Alice.  The family have suggested the international Sightsavers Charity as a favoured cause if anyone wishes to make a donation in Frank's memory.

Secret Art Show 2014

This year's Secret Art Show opened yesterday.  Now in its fifth year, this online auction continues to raise funds for the MS Trust, so this is a great opportunity to sample new art at a reasonable price and support a very worthy cause.

All the work measures 12cm x 12cm - or approximately the size of a CD inlay card - and each piece is priced at just £45

The links above and below will take you directly to the MS Shop to view this year's work. Art is displayed anonymously - but there are a number of famous artists and YAS members among the entries so see who you can recognise.
