York Art Workers Association March Meeting

The next York Art Workers Association meeting is on Monday 2 March at 7.30.

Artist Jake Attree will be giving an illustrated talk at Jacobs Well, Trinity Lane, off Micklegate in York.  Non members are very welcome & admission is £5.

Jake Attree was born in 1950 in York and trained at York School of Art, Liverpool College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Although living in Saltaire, with a studio at Dean Clough in Halifax, much of his work is still inspired by his native city. The guiding principle behind his work is the practice and application of drawing.

Call for Submission - Hideaways

News of a third party exhibition that may interest some of our members.  This is not a York Art Society event so any members interested in participating should contact the organisers directly.

Katherine April is an artist based in York, UK. Her upcoming exhibition explores the notion of hideaways - of our dependence on shelter and the way in which we seek and long for it but so often wish to flee from it towards nature.

The exhibition, entitled 'Breathing into Bloom', will consist of three walls of Katherine's work - but she would like to display others' depictions of shelter on the fourth wall.

Please send a digital image that represents your own experience of a hideaway to Katherine. This might consist of a self-portrait, landscape, interior view, or something entirely different. The donated images will be printed by Katherine in postcard form and be dispersed as a group across the vacant wall.

The postcard images will be on sale, priced at £10 each - all proceeds from these pieces will go to the charity Parkinson's UK.

If selected, your work will feature within the exhibition at White Room, York during April 2015.

These pieces will be seen by a broad audience and your name will appear within set exhibition materials. The exhibition will be well documented and we will send photographs to those who are not able to attend in person.

Original work only please - large Jpeg files via email are preferable. Please attach an artist statement and brief description of the work if possible.

Please address all enquiries and submissions to Katherine:

Deadline for entries: 18th March 2015.

The BBC Big Painting Challenge

This weekend see the launch of the BBC's Big Painting Challenge, a six week television series hosted by Una Stubbs and Richard Bacon in a search for Britain's best amateur artist.

No episodes have been viewed at the time of writing, but promotional material suggests it consists of a series of knock out challenges, similar to the format employed by the Great British Bake-Off or the Great British Sewing Bee.

The first show is broadcast at 6pm Sunday 22nd February and will be available on BBC iPlayer for sometime afterwards.  The theme for episode one is landscapes and much of it was filmed around Alnwick Castle.  It also includes a short section on one of the nation's best known landscapes, Constable's "The Hay Wain".  (Spot the hidden wife!)

Next week ..... Portraits !

There's a write up of the new programme in this week's Radio Times and the series is also supported by it's own pages on the BBC site

Late Spring Exhibition

We announced at the start of this year that the 201st Exhibition was being moved from early April to late May.  We can now confirm that the dates will be

Monday 25th May to Sunday 31st May

This is just a little over three months away so it's time to start thinking about the pieces of work you wish to enter.  The official entry forms will be posted out to members over the coming weeks and will also be downloadable from this blog.

Please remember that the handing in day, Monday 25th, is also the late Spring Bank Holiday.

Unsold work can be collected on the afternoon of Sunday 31st May, after the exhibition closes to the public.  Members who face challenges handing in or collecting during the specified times should try to get a friend or colleague to do so on their behalf.

If anyone would be willing to allow their pictures to be used in the promotional material for the Exhibition, please contact Shannon Morgan with digital copies of your work by Sunday 22nd March.

Results of the St Leonard's exhibtion

Last month the St Leonard's Hospice Shop in Heworth hosted a two week exhibition of art by our members.  27 pictures were sold during this event along with a number of the remaining fridge magnets from the 200th Exhibition.  Total revenue was just under £1000, raising a total of £281.20 towards the Hospice's work.

Congratulations and thanks to all who exhibited or supported in any way.  Particular thanks to Peter Cooke, Audrey Kirk and Wendy Taylor for generously donating more than the standard 20% share to the hospice.

Maira Aebi, shop manager, commented "Thank you so much for once again bringing art and our charity together in an otherwise dull, quiet month.  The quality of art this year has been the best yet, and we had many people in looking and so many positive comments. Even though sales were not as strong as in past years, we were very happy with the traffic it brought to our shop.  We hope you will be happy to do it again in 2016!"
