Self Help Group

Here's some photo's from Lin Taylor, all taken at the recent March meeting of the Self Help Group in Bishopsthorpe.  This was another successful day with 14 attendees.  It was also a pleasure to welcome back former YAS President Dr Peter Dench - nice to see him getting back into his art.

We've said frequently that these events are some of our most successful activities and are at the core of YAS' mission to promote the arts in York and the surrounding area.

The objective is to allow the attendees to support each other - working in their own style and media and learning from their colleagues in a relaxed and informal session.   There are so many different skills and approaches on display that, regardless of experience, anyone can pick up something new or offer advice on someone else's work.

So many styles and subjects ........loose donkeys from June  ....

... and tight owls from John

Here's Lin's own work from the day.  Two views of this coastal scene -  from before and after she took suggestions from the other artists and added more people to the shoreline to help the composition. Click on any of the photographs to enlarge them.

... before ... Lin's work as submitted for critique

... and after ,,,,     now with added Strangers on the Shore !

The next session this year is on Saturday 20th June at the same venue.  Details of what to expect can be found here

The BBC Little Painting Challenge

Running alongside the TV series we told you about last week, the BBC are encouraging the public to participate in their 'Little Painting Challenge'

Rules are quite simple (and reminiscent of our own fridge magnet exhibition). All you have to do to take part is draw or paint your entry on the blank side of a pre-printed postcard, fill in your details, add a stamp and pop it in the post box. The postcards were issued with the Radio Times last week but are also obtainable from public libraries across the country or by visiting the BBC web site

1000 of the best entries including the winners will be exhibited in the newly refurbished Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester from the 4th of May 2015.
