York River Art Market - Date Changed

We all thoroughly enjoyed last Sunday's inaugural York River Art Market.

If you missed it, there are still two more to come this summer

Sunday 3 July 2016

Saturday 9 July 2016

Note that the final event was originally planned for Sunday 10th but has had to be moved to Saturday 9th. Both take place on the Lendal side of the River Ouse.

Visit the FaceBook page to find out more details

This is a very welcome return to outdoor exhibiting and we want to see it become a regular event. So, even if you are not exhibiting yourself(!), please go along and support the event.

203rd Exhibition

Our 203rd Summer Exhibition takes place at the DeGrey Rooms, York from 18th to 24th July 2016.

Entry forms were circulated earlier this week with the latest Newsletter.  If you have not received one, please contact Ron Walker on
  • Handing in of work is between 09:00 to 11:00 on Monday 18th July
  • Collection of unsold work is between 16:00 to 17:00 on Sunday 24th July
We want to leave the art on display for as long as possible.  Last public entry on the Sunday is at 3:00pm so we ask that no member attempts to remove their pictures before 4:00pm at the earliest. We also encourage all members to follow the proper check out procedures as it enables the committee to resolve any disputes over mislaid work.

Please adhere strictly to these times. If you can't make them, see if one of your friends in the Society can submit or collect your work. There is no facility to store art at the venue after the Exhibition ends. Neither York Art Society or the DeGrey Rooms will take any responsibility for uncollected work.

There is no hanging fee at this event but the Society will take 25% commission on sold work.

.. "to me, to you .."
Volunteers needed for setting up and dismantling
As ever we need willing volunteers to aid with the setting up and dismantling and a team of stewards to cover the desk during Exhibition opening hours.

Exhibition posters and flyers will be available shortly. We would be grateful if members could help distribute these to spread the word about the event,

The success of the Exhibition depends on participation of all members so please think about how you could help.  Volunteers should contact Ron Walker on

Unsold works can only be collected between 4pm and 5pm Sunday 24th July

Annual General Meeting Saturday 18th June

This month's meeting of York Art Society takes place at 2:00pm on Saturday 18th June at the usual venue of Christ Church Hall, Stockton Lane, York.

This month we have the AGM in place of the usual formal artist demonstration but there will be other art themed activities on the day.

There will also be an update on plans for the summer exhibition.

All members should receive the latest newsletter over the next week.  We would urge you to read this and make an effort to attend Saturday's AGM, as this is your chance to influence the direction of the Society.

York Art Society only exists as the sum of the contribution of its members so please think about how you can participate and support in the coming year.

Email Scams and Hacks

Members may have recently had a series of plain short emails containing an unspecified link that redirects to a religious site.  These are not from York Art Society.

They appear to originate from one individual in a southern based design company, though they may also be an unwitting participant in the hack.  Regardless we have brought the matter to the company's attention and asked them to cease and desist.

As far as we can tell, this is simply spam mail and not a virus, but we would advise you to delete those mails without opening.

We would also urge members to regularly review their own security settings as the Society receives several phishing, spam or virus containing mails from the membership each month.

Official mails from York Art Society are only sent from either a named Committee member or via the HTML formatted blog update from

BBC One Painting Show

The BBC have announced a new series which will see amateur artists being mentored by some of the leading names in visual art.  School of Art is a primetime series scheduled for later this year on BBC One and the producers are currently looking for anyone with a huge talent and enormous potential to apply.

The deadline is Friday 10th June. The programme is open to any UK residents over 16.

Details can be found at

George Smith's Garden 2016

Always a popular event, George Smith is once again inviting York Art Society members to a relaxing and inspiring day of open air painting in his beautiful garden at the Manor House, Heslington Gardens, York, YO10 5EA.

The date for this year is Saturday 6th of August. The day runs from 9:30 am to around 4.30 pm.

There is a nominal charge of £3.50 to help cover costs.

Any members wishing to attend should contact Lynda Baker on 01904 849443 or by emailing

Attendees will need to bring their own art materials and a chair to sit on in the gardens. If the weather turns wet, there are some tables and chairs under cover.

As in previous years, morning coffee and afternoon tea with home-made cakes will be available for no extra charge. You are also advised to bring a packed lunch. Alternatively, you can get a drink and pub lunch at the nearby Deramore Arms.

Parking is available in The Deramore’s car park (next to the Manor House, at the far end of the village on the left hand side) but is severely limited and allocated on a first come first served basis. You will need a card from Lynda to put in the car to say you are in George’s Garden for the day. There are currently only three spaces left so if you're planning on using private transport, consider car sharing with another member.

Geoff Kersey at Patchings

Geoff Kersey, who has been a popular demonstrator at some of our past meetings, has dropped an email reminding us that he will be Guest Artist at Patchings Art Festival on Thursday 9th June.

Geoff will be painting on and off for most of the day, and will have a collection of framed paintings on display, plus plenty of unframed demo and workshop pieces available for sale, alongside his range of books and DVDs.

You can read more about Patchings on the official site

and see more of Geoff's work at
